How to Plan Meals with ChatGPT: Easy Prompts for a Week of Dinners

The short answer

ChatGPT is good at the boring parts of meal planning: coming up with ideas, fitting meals around your week, and turning a plan into a shopping list. It's less reliable on the numbers. Treat it as a helpful brainstorming partner, not a nutritionist, and check anything health- or safety-related yourself.

What ChatGPT is good at (and where it slips)

Use it for:

Be careful with:

Before you start: give it the details

The more ChatGPT knows, the better the plan. Have these ready:

Replace the parts in [brackets].

1. A week of dinners

Plan 7 dinners for [number] people. We have [time] minutes to cook on weeknights and more time on weekends. Avoid [foods/allergies]. We like [cuisines or favorite meals]. Reuse ingredients across meals so less goes to waste, and plan one night for leftovers. Show it as a simple table: day, meal, cooking time.

2. Grocery list from your plan

Turn this meal plan into a grocery list grouped by store section (produce, meat and fish, dairy, pantry, frozen). Combine duplicate items and give quantities for [number] people. I already have [staples you own], so leave those off.

3. Use what's in the fridge

I have [list everything: e.g., half a bag of spinach, 4 eggs, leftover rice, a can of chickpeas, cheddar]. Suggest 3 dinners I can make mostly from these, with the fewest extra ingredients. Tell me what I'd need to buy for each.

4. Stick to a budget

Plan 5 dinners for [number] people for about [amount] total. Use budget-friendly staples like beans, eggs, rice and seasonal vegetables. Estimate a rough cost per meal and suggest cheaper swaps where you can. (Prices vary by store and area, so treat any cost as a rough guess.)

5. Dietary needs or preferences

Plan 5 [vegetarian / dairy-free / gluten-free] dinners for [number] people. Do not include [allergen] in any form, and flag any ingredient that commonly contains it, like sauces or stock. List the full ingredients for each meal so I can check them.

6. Make it work for your week

Here's my week: [e.g., Monday soccer practice, Wednesday late meeting, Friday pizza night]. Adjust the meal plan so busy nights get 20-minute or slow-cooker meals, and tell me what I can prep on Sunday.
